Accidents Happen, We Totally Understand

It was a day like any other. The sun shone brightly down in Irvine, California as the Woods family made their way over to Orange County Great Park to have a calming family picnic. Mr. and Mrs. Woods were conversing about how their work week went as their son and daughter sat in the back, eager to see the Great Park hot air balloon.

Mr. Woods was cruising along Jeffrey Road, slowly coming to a halt at the light. He reached over to hold Mrs. Woods’ hand, turning to smile at her before looking back to keep watch for when the light turned green. The red switched to green and Mr. Woods inched forward to turn onto Irvine Boulevard, careful as it was a yield left turn. Many cars zipped by at a fast speed and it didn’t seem like there would be an opening any time soon. The kids were happily singing along to the radio.  Mr. Woods kept inching forward as the light turned yellow, assuming that the oncoming cars would begin to brake. He spotted his chance to take the turn, with no cars in sight but a gray Lexus that had to have been slowing down.

He began making the turn when a nervous feeling overcame him. Out of the corner of his eye, the gray Lexus did not seem to have slowed down at all. He instinctively gripped his wife’s hand tightly, instructing his kids to quickly duck and hold their heads.

Time seemed to slow to a turtle’s pace, the Lexus inches away.

A loud crash.

The kids’ screams.

Their car lurched to the side, careening to the curb. Woods looked over at his wife and kids, breathing a sigh of relief when he noticed no one had gotten hurt. He doesn’t think he can say the same for the car, though. He doesn’t even want to think about the aftermath of this.
